Fighting Blindness in Angola

Restoring sight and transforming lives.

Fighting Blindness in Angola (FiBiA) is a charity dedicated to reducing preventable blindness and improving access to eye care across Angola. Working in partnership with local organisations and healthcare professionals, we support the development of ophthalmology services, provide training and equipment, and help fund treatment for those who cannot afford it.

Across Angola, thousands of people live with avoidable blindness due to conditions such as cataracts, refractive errors and diabetic retinopathy. For many, access to treatment is limited by poverty, distance and lack of medical resources.

Through our partnership with SOLE Angola and the Boa Vista Eye Clinic in Benguela, we are helping deliver life-changing eye care to communities across the country.

Our Impact

Since 1994, the Boa Vista clinic and its outreach network have already achieved remarkable results:

  • Over 700,000 eye consultations
  • More than 70,000 cataract surgeries
  • 2800 cataract operations a year
  • Over 140,000 pairs of glasses provided
  • Eye care services delivered in 10 provinces of Angola

Every surgery, consultation, and training programme brings us closer to a future where preventable blindness no longer limits people's lives.

Why This Matters

Angola has a population of more than 36 million people, with many living in poverty and rural communities where healthcare services are limited. In some areas, people experiencing blindness simply cannot afford the consultation or surgery that could restore their sight.

By supporting eye care services, training local healthcare professionals, and providing essential medical equipment, we help ensure that people across Angola can access the treatment they need.
